Education Gateway: Transformation of Kleinberg Primary School as catalyst for Urban Regeneration

University of Cape Town 2017

Kleinberg Primary School (KPS) is a no fee state school, located at the entry point to Ocean View, in the South Peninsula of the Western Cape. The school was established in 1968, and in 2017 had an enrolment of 1135 learners. Not only was the existing school building not designed for such numbers (originally designed to accomodate +/- 400 learners). This in turn caused serious overcrowding issues, but the school was also not appropriately designed for current day teaching methods. The existing school has no hall and a mobile library was recently donated to the school by an NGO. The dilapidated state of the facilities poses serious health and security risks.

The opportunity to redesign KPS allowed for the catalytic transformation of Ocean View which conforms to Apartheid spatial programming that segregated the community from the surrounding areas and allow for a more inclusive urban fabric.

The transformation of the facilities allowed to question current pedagogical practices and create a more inclusive and productive learning environment for all. The facility is designed to be multi-functional and engage with the community and facilitate new social interactions while maintaining a secure learning environment.
